Zimbabwe's Codeine Cough Syrup Epidemic

Zimbabwe is at risk of losing its youth to codeine cough syrup, as the addiction epidemic has already engulfed what the experts estimate could be over half the country’s young people. Despite the growing problem, Zimbabwe’s government has not yet opened rehabilitation clinics, meaning addicts are often sent to prison or psychiatric wards.

The cough syrup, often of the brand BronCleer, is imported illegally from South Africa, and is sold on every street corner, in bars, school yards and…

  1. How does it destroy teeth ? Lol the sugar? This is still legitimately made for coughs, why wouldn’t a medicine put teeth corroding compounds, to be able to sell their brand name of tooth paste haha, what rot’s their teeth is the lack of motivation for hygiene (brushing) (just not giving a duck about life anymore) and addicts focus on First not withdrawing, THEN still somewhat enjoy the buzz because you still wana get high/not just stop being dopesick(in withdrawal) and then the constant feeling of if you can’t come up with the $, find the guy and the stuff is good the withdrawal slowly and this cycle just keep repeating itself until like all good things it will somehow come to an end.

  2. dang…. they must be real bored down there to chose cough syrup of all things to get on

  3. 06:07 first time i heard someone said zimbabwe how it really been spoken. just for that i like that video.
but i cant pronounce it like that haha im from germany.

  4. It's sad as I am reading these comments because there isn't anyone offering a solution to this problem but only criticism.. it's also sad that so many people in Zimbabwe under the influence of this drug have gotten hooked to this only because of the government's failure to provide jobs and essentials for a country to run efficiently… it's also sad that these people from vice would come into the country and show part of the population that is in poverty. This poverty is due to government oppression… those people who appeared in the video saying they are there to help stop addiction and further spread of the situation (NGO'S) are fckng hypocrites. Them and the government misuse money that comes from international organizations which is to aid the country. They use those funds for themselves literally.. only the elite in government and with higher positions benefit in Zimbabwe. The rest of the population is left to suffer and find their own way of coping… this shit just heartbreaking seeing my country represented in this manner… it's not funny laughing at a country that is struggling with such a big drug deal… this may not be crack or cocaine but it has killed most of the youth in Zimbabwe.. they don't see anything worth living for except that syrup. The people themselves who are addicted dont know that they are killing themselves and ruining their futures that's why you see them laughing in the videos because their conscience is no longer functional but it has been drowned in that syrup… if there are any international organizations that are really willing to help please by all means be the ones in charge of the operation do not let the state take control of the matter for nothing will be done in their hands…

  5. There's a low dose of codeine in that. I couldn't imagine if they had access to oxys or methadone.

  6. Codeine based cough syrups sucked back in the day. We always went for liquid hydrocodone, tussionex or NoTuss.

  7. We owned a pay toilet back in the mid 90s, and i've seen bottles of cough syrup left on every corner of the toilet at the end of the day. Most of the users were like in their early 30s.
